Exhaust Air Heat Pumps
An exhaust air heat pump removes stale air from bathrooms and kitchens while drawing fresh air into your home. As the warm air is extracted, the system recovers the heat energy and reuses it to provide heating and hot water.
This means your home stays well ventilated, energy-efficient, and comfortable — all from one smart system.
How it works:
1. Continuous Ventilation
- The system gently extracts warm, stale air from bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms — areas where moisture and humidity build up. This creates a slight negative pressure, allowing fresh outdoor air to enter through wall vents, keeping your home properly ventilated and improving indoor air quality.
2. Heat Recovery
- Before the extracted air leaves your home, it passes through the heat pump unit. Here, the heat energy is captured using a refrigerant system. Instead of letting that warmth escape, the system recovers and upgrades the heat to a usable temperature.
3. Heating & Hot Water Supply
- The recovered heat is then used to provide heating via underfloor systems or radiators, as well as domestic hot water. This means one compact system delivers ventilation, heating, and hot water — efficiently and sustainably.
Energy-efficient
Uses electricity to move heat rather than create it, so it can be 3–4 times more efficient than electric heaters.
Eco-friendly
Reduces carbon footprint, especially when paired with renewable electricity.
Versatile
Provides both heating and cooling in one system.
Low running costs
Saves money compared to traditional electric or oil heating.
There are different types:
- Air source heat pumps (ASHP): Take heat from the outside air.
- Ground source heat pumps (GSHP): Take heat from the ground via buried pipes.
- Exhaust air heat pumps: Take heat from the air that’s being vented out of your home.

Is an Exhaust Air Heat Pump suitable for all homes?
Exhaust air heat pumps work best in:
-New builds
-Highly insulated, airtight homes
-Properties with low heating demand
-Homes with mechanical ventilation systems
They are less suitable for older, poorly insulated properties without upgrades.
Does it replace a boiler?
Yes. An exhaust air heat pump can replace a gas or electric boiler in suitable properties.
It provides:
-Central heating
-Domestic hot water
-Continuous ventilation
All in one integrated system.
Can it work with underfloor heating?
Yes. Exhaust air heat pumps operate at lower temperatures, making them well suited to:
-Underfloor heating
-Low-temperature radiator systems
Are running costs low?
Yes, in well-designed, energy-efficient homes.
Running costs depend on:
-Insulation levels
-Airtightness
-System design
-Household hot water demand
Does it require maintenance?
Yes, but maintenance is minimal and typically includes:
Filter cleaning or replacement
Annual servicing checks
Ensuring ventilation airflow remains balanced
